Samus Aran the main character of the Metroid Series (also the character you play as) Has been around since 1986 on the NES.
She first starred in Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the U.S. or the Famicom (Family Computer) in Japan. The Japanese version of Metroid had 3 save files, while the American version had a password system. The U.S. version's password system had passwords with some neat effects.
This password:
SAMUS 8RIDLEY
444444 444444
Spans you in Norfair, with suitless Samus, with the short Wave Beam, 60/? amount of missiles, no Varia Suit, about three energy tanks, no morph-ball, but bombs. Without the morph-ball the player can't go anywhere, but if they go to Brinstar and commit suicide, they can get the morph-ball.
This password:
JUSTIN BAILEY
------ ------
Spans you in Norfair with all upgrades, 5 energy tanks and with Kraid and Ridley defeated. Many refer to the password as Samus "Just in bailey", which bailey is Australian for "bikini". But Samus is in a leotard, not a bikini. I personally like to believe its a reference to Samus' parents' names, where Justin is her father and Bailey is her mother.
This password:
000000 000020
000000 000020
spawns you in Brinstar with suitless Samus, but no upgrades. Basically its as if u were to press "Start" and play as unarmored Samus from the beginning of the game. Now if you were to switch the 2's to 1's you would start the game normally with armored Samus as if you were to press "Start".
This password:
NARPAS SWORD0
000000 000000
spawns you in Brinstar with all upgrades, no energy tanks, or missiles, but comes with a twist. You are invincible as your health never drops below 30 energy or raises above 39 and you have infinite missiles by pressing select to arm them (even though technically you don't have them), you also get the ice beam, but it looks like the wave beam sprite and flies straight and does not pass through walls (the wave beam passes through walls and swivels up and down). Unfortunately, Kraid and Ridley are undefeated (but what's to worry? you're invincible!).
Initially, if you are to beat the game in under one hour the ending scene you obtain is Samus in a bikini! This password makes the game incredibly easy to beat making this desire easy to accomplish (I've seen the ending [because I used this code for the Metroid Zero-Mission installation of Metroid], so its completely true, but you can only play as Samus in a leotard. There is no playable Bikini Samus)
Now many people refer to this password as being the "North American Release Password" where NAR is short for North American Release and the other words, if put together, spell password. Now for me I thought it was a Narpas Sword, which was something that made you god-like. I believed "Narpas" were maybe an alien race and the "sword" was a weapon that gave you the neat effects this password offers. Although, another possibility I thought of was the actual name of the alien statues that hold powers ups for Samus in the game as an early name, but those statues are known as Chozos, and are not Narpas (this is just a fan theory though).
(I'll post more on this subject later. Believe it or not, there's a lot of info on Samus.)
